In recent years, studies of obesity treatment has been expanded to include psychological causes. Studies have identified emotions may play a role in weight gain, obesity and weight loss.
There are 3 emotional problems that can lead to weight gain, as reported by about.com, Wednesday (02/29/2012):
1. Stress
For most people, the reason for eating is to fill the stomach and produce power. But in times of stress, some people use the food as the best way to calm emotions. Eating for emotional (emotional eating) does not necessarily lead to weight gain for everyone, but this could be the cause of obesity in some people.
In a study of diet and exercise habits of obese mothers, researchers found that stress triggers overeating and prevent women from practicing healthy habits.
Avoiding stress is not always possible. But relaxation techniques can be a healthy alternative to manage emotions during times of stress.
2. Depression
In a literature review of obesity, a group of researchers identified several ways in which depression can lead to obesity. One of them is often prescribed some antidepressants can cause weight gain.
The researchers also noted that the lack of sleep, a common symptom of depression, is also a risk factor for obesity. Inactivity and lack of exercise, other symptoms of depression, it can also lead to increased weight.
