A study conducted at Indiana University states that regular exercise can prevent hardening of the arteries and cardiovascular disease risk.
Age and lack of activity of a person being the biggest cause of hardening of the arteries. Hardened blood vessels lose elasticity that can cause cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke.
The study was conducted on 49 adults. 33 of whom were swimmers from the U.S. Masters Swimmers and the rest is made up of people who are rarely and never exercising.
The study says that 33 swimmers from the U.S. Masters Swimmers have a lower risk of experiencing hardening of the arteries than the other participants. In fact, the researchers also said that the participants were women more at risk of hardening of the muscle than men.
"Participants were women showed greater risk of hardening of the arteries. Especially women who rarely exercise. Get used to exercising can provide great benefits for women, "said Maleah Holland, author of the study from the University's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.
Researchers also concluded that women who do not move more at risk of cardiovascular disease than men who do not move, as reported by Newshealth, May 31, 2012.
"The results of this study reinforce the assumption that a person's level of activity is more influential on health than age," said Joel Stager, professor and director of the University's Counsilman Center, Department Of Kinesiology.
