According to recent research, lose weight, especially fat around your waist, can significantly improve the quality of your sleep.
Scientists in the U.S. have found that people who lost about 6 pounds of belly fat and reduce waist circumference of about 15 percent could actually feel the quality of sleep is much better.
On the other hand, those who are overweight or obese will continue to have sleep problems, according to researchers from Johns Hopkins University in the U.S.. The study involved 77 people who have type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes.
The participants, all of whom are also overweight or obese, were randomly assigned. One group went on a supervised diet and exercise, while the other group just dieting.
The participants also filled out a survey at the beginning and end of the sleep study to identify sleep problems, including sleep apnea, daytime fatigue, insomnia, restless sleep, excessive sleep or excessive sleepiness, and use of sedatives to help sleep.
Body mass index and the amount of their abdominal fat were also measured at the beginning and end of the study. Both groups lost an average weight of about 6 kg. They also lost about the same amount of abdominal fat, as assessed by magnetic resonance imaging.
The scientists found that both groups managed to improve their overall quality of sleep around 20 percent, with no difference between groups.
"We found that increasing sleep quality was significantly associated with overall weight loss, especially belly fat," says Kerry Stewart, professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as quoted Dailymail.co.uk.
At least 500,000 Britons estimated to suffer from sleep apnea, which mainly affects mostly middle-aged, overweight men, who may stop breathing hundreds of times a night.
